JUSTICE LEAGUE REVISITED
THE SNYDER CUT by Pierre Maertin
After three years of tears mulling over the failure of The Justice League, tons of fans reactions and multiple creative personnel inputs, the Justice League remains a clunking behemoth full of holes in terms of the premise of the fictional world created by DC Comics in which these superheroes live and fight for a better world.
STOP THE PRESSES!!!!!
That said however, The Snyder Cut is simply a vast improvement over its 2017 predecessor.
In development after development, the characters arc stories are more beautifully delineated and with plenty of touching, emotional scenes, while the final battle against Steppenwolf is far more robust, longer and much more satisfying.
Having seen the 2017 movie, there were enough twists and turns in the Snyder Cut to even entertain someone who already knows what the overall structure of the movie is and how the ending is supposed to unfold.
Bravo to the Snyder team but it’s a much belated move that came on the heels of a massive creative failure.
Another editorial piece is in the works that will delve into the behind-the-scenes power play scenarios that led to the 2017 Justice League, because make no mistake, this kind of retcon and retread is unprecedented in Hollywood’s entire history of filmmaking.
We are not going to get into the details of what works in this film, if you have seen the first Justice League film, then you owe it to yourself to see the Snyder Cut, its been rejuggled to deliver a completely different tone and emotional texture – the extra two hours definitely weigh in and make the film far more savory and satisfying.
However, amazingly enough there are a number of clunkety issues that persist and could have easily been addressed by the Snyder team which would have elevated this movie to a truly remarkable production that could have stepped up forcefully to Marvel’s Endgame.
WHERE IS THE MILITARY, KAL EL?
This movie clearly puts the stamp of Superman on the Justice League, whereas previously his return was in the final act of the film, in this movie Superman brought back to life is clearly shown as the beginning of the end for Darkseid’s forces, at least in this chapter of the Justice League saga.
However, what is really amazing is the manner in which our super powered heroes in this movie act in the apparent complete absence of the entire world’s armed forces – alone – like a pack of wolves -rather than acting in concert with a huge array of armed forces the planet has stockpiled since the days of Old when Heroes --- blah blah blah – according to the retelling of the now bleak story by Diana Prince, and the Amazons. Heroes of Legend banded together to send Steppenwolf with his tail tucked between his legs to the drums of defeat. This is now the second slightly different version in which Wonder Woman tells us how ALL OF MANKINGS banded together to give the invading forces a defeat to remember for thousands of years.

Martians come knocking
Leesa39 - Sat, 03/20/2021 - 22:29The only completely new scene is at the very end with a new Justice League candidate? Nope, nope, nope there are several teasers at the end that hint at upcoming sequels and I thought the other guy was going to be the Green Lantern but then hey, wait a second, how come it wasnt Supergirl or .... (wink)?
I do competitive ICE skating, very competitive ICE skating
Your review of Justice League is almost five pages long
Clarissa_Soto 23 - Tue, 03/23/2021 - 16:19I am a premium member and the premium version feels like its five pages long (and well worth the read), but there is a note at the very conclusion saying there is more for silver and gold members? Exactly how big a review is this for the gold members? what more did you pack in there?
The new Snyder Cut
Quinn Huang - Sun, 03/28/2021 - 17:06I think the consensus I am getting from friends who also watched the new four hour version is that while it has a truckload of problems its still a better piece than the original release from 2017. I am not giving out spoilers and your movie review has tons of examples and explanations - very sharp.
The biggest issue FOR ME was that Steppenwolf was lame and there clearly was so little of Superman flexing, the original felt more like Batman and Friends. Even in the new version, Superman is barely pushing himself, but its far more entertaininig than the Joss Whedon effort.
In the DC Comics print world, the publisher typically spends six months to a year unfolding the intrigue, mystery and suspense before someone as big as Darkseid or Steppenwolf has a final showdown with our superheroes, this movie has none of that so its a little flat for most fans of the genre.
I read both your reviews of 2017 and the Snyder Cut, while all of the reasons you mention are on target, it seems to me one of the biggest issues you missed is Ben Affleck's ego, he is the superstar and Cavill isnt, so if you look closely Justice League is ABOUT BATMAN/BRUCE WAYNE putting the team together and not about Superman - who in the comic books is the natural leader of the group.
In fact the closing scenes of Justice League has us Bruce at Wayne Manor going over with Alfred about converting his huge hall into the Knights of the Round Table Meeting Room, with Diana showing up just in time to chorus in.
Before Justice League stumbled, Affleck was the only cast member with tons of Hollywood star power (Ben Affleck and Matt Damon - anyone? anyone?)
It's not Affleck's acting skills, his are superb, its the attempt to weave the entire storyline around his character that deadens the pace of Justice League, Batman has NO superpowers, in solo movies, DC Comics explored the man pushing himself beyond limits to resemble a super hero with super powers - but in a team of super powered beings, his story arc is feeble compared to the other characters who command far more heart-pumping action, far more adrenaline from the audience - and action is what superhero movies are all about.
The Snyder Cut makes me wanna give the DCEU another shot.
Snyder Goes On and On - The Longer Runtime Fever Wave
Darrin Fleming - Sun, 04/04/2021 - 21:59A feverish wave is rolling down the hills and meadows of so-called "critics" whose ink wells run at the fresh smell of money, longer movies are now the absolute must, Snyder's Cut being PERCEIVED as better following a couple of dry years at the movies (meaning flops and fewer mega hits) and the COVID 19 lockdown which made the perfect storm for a viewing avalanche to stream the new Justice League - and with every advertising mouth disguised as a critic - chiming in and reversing their position - desperation forces new rules on desperate weaklings - the GIRL CHORUS LINE IS PRESENTLY SINGING THIS TUNE
Sooooooooooo Come on, baby
Let's do the twist
twist, twist
Come on, bayybayyyy
Let's do the twist
twist and twist
And it goes like this
twist, twist
Two new flops later and WB is back in seriously hot water, sighhhhh
Captain American Goes Super Snyder Dark
Jennifer Edmond - Sun, 04/11/2021 - 21:02OMG the new Captain American John Walker goes super SNYDER STYLE darrrrrrk in the newest episode of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, omg omg omg, PARENTAL ADVISORY FOR KIDS its only fantasy, none of that is true in the real world.
My pulse was pounding and my breathing was shallow just before the credits started, FYI that scene was at the very end of the episode. Naughty Marvel, they are wading into DC's territory.
