Pininfarina, Styling Designer of Ferrari - An Exclusive Interview
PININFARINA, STYLING DESIGNER OF FERRARI - AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH WEST COAST MIDNIGHT RUN™
EXCERPTS FROM THE INTERVIEW
If you were a third-generation engineer and dedicated to automotive style with a crew of top-notch artists whose mission is to wow the world with form to grace one of the oldest and at present, the most powerful and most successful automotive racing names ever, Ferrari.
How would the grandson of Batista “Pinin” Farina, the founder of Pininfarina S.p.A. a design and style firm that started its business by creating coachwork for royalty in Europe, the Middle East and the Far East, speak about a vision for the future and the efforts of the firm to remain on top in an era that saw its equally famed competitor, Bertone, close its doors after more than century of prestigious designs deemed, in some instances, instant classics by automotive critics from around the world?
West Coast Midnight Run™’s Peter Maertin, held an interview with Paulo Pininfarina at his Torino headquarters in late 2017 and the following are excerpts from a lengthy and insightful interview with the dedicated professional, his firm’s ups and downs and glimpses of the past and future he felt were worthy of sharing with our readers, our fans, and with followers of automotive motorsports, lovers of finesse in shape, form, color and refined beauty in motorcraft work.
On the topic of the legacy of former President Barack Obama:
“Certainly Obama has not been the best ... his foreign policy was sometimes weak and swinging ...”
Asked what items should be at the top of EU’s policy agenda, Mr. Pininfarina emphasized military and intelligence integration. This is part of a the same issue which in 2018 became a cause for hoopla in the North American press when the President of France suggested to President Trump that the EU needs its own expanded army and a broader role on the international scene.
“What term served by the rotating presidency of the EU has been your favorite since the EU Presidency was created?” – Peter Maertin for West Coast Midnight Run™.
“I do not have an answer for this question” – Paulo Pininfarina, CEO of Pininfarina S.p.A.
Underlining this month’s upheavals in Paris (December 2018) on the issue of the European environmental reforms and new taxes to be implemented in France, are Mr. Pininfarina’s detailed comments to be enjoyed in the interview inside our Members Area.
On the issue of Emmanuel Macron, President of France:
“I like Mr. Macron and his focus on … the EU but for now it is too early to express judgements”
Mr. Pininfarina also speaks out on their newest Architectural division and their ITA Airport project with AECOM, President Trump, the UK Brexit and what he feels are top items of concern for Europe and the European Commission.
H2 SPEED FROM PROTOTYPING TO LIMITED PRODUCTION
At present Pininfarina S.p.A. is busy with their newest project, the H2 Speed billed as a hybrid between a racing prototype and a production supercar. Making 0 to 60 in 3.4 seconds is a snap thanks to four electric motors powered by hydrogen fuel cells that yield 653 HP at 13,000 rpm. The racer makes the quarter mile in 11 seconds hitting a top speed of 186 mph.
The H2 Speed basically reacts like an "all-wheel drive" with a 41% front and 59% rear weight distribution - since each electric motor is directly mounted on each individual tire. The new design of the H2 is also equipped with regenerative braking and does not require a clutch nor gear shifting with a final ratio of 1:6.3. That’s right the design does not incorporate a gearbox and the lack of a driveline further reduces overall mechanical inefficiencies.
The racer is built from a carbon fiber monocoque and comes in at a total curb weight of 3,130 lbs. The H2 Speed has already garnered the Best Concept Car of the Year Award at the 2016 Geneva Auto Show. Pininfarina is planning a limited-edition rollout with each car built to custom specifications of the client.
